Testvale Squares

Long Established Square Dance Club based in Totton

Welcome to Testvale Squares, founded in 2013 by Carol and Alan Gerrey.
The Club has grown to a membership of over 50 dancers and regularly gets 2 or 3 squares on the floor
at our regular Club nights on Friday evenings at the Totton and Eling Community Centre.

Concentrating on the Basic to Mainstream moves, the Club is always bringing on new dancers
and giving training to those dancers who may have stopped for a few years.
The Club also encourages good Mainstream dancers to take part in Plus training when the Caller thinks they're ready.

Carol and Alan have created a wonderful Club where help is always given, extra training is provided for those who need it,
and fun and laughter are more important than taking things too seriously.

We have regular social events, both afternoon and evening,
details of these can be found on the Events page, click here for further information.

Events

It's so lovely to see the ladies in their beautiful skirts, tops and dresses, and the gents with their western shirts, collar tips and string ties.

First Friday of every month

Totton & Eling Community Centre,
Library Road, Totton, SO40 3RL

A fun evening with a mix of barn and square dancing, games and silly things!

Pot Luck Supper, so bring along a plate of something delicious for you to eat and to share.

There will be a Craft Sales Table and Raffle this evening with all proceeds going to Motor Neurone Disease, so pick up some last minute Christmas gifts for friends and family.

It would be great if you could bring along coins for these purchases, getting a 'float' from the bank is nigh impossible these days!

Friday 12th December 2025 7pm-9.30pm

Totton & Eling Community Centre, Library Road, Totton, SO40 3RL

Start 2026 with a bit of a workout! Dance your socks off or get your petticoats in a bit of a twist with a Rock and Roll theme. Catch up with those you haven't seen since we 'broke up' in December last year.

There will be a Pot Luck Supper this evening so bring along a plate of food for yourself and to share.

Got too many packets of shortbread and biscuits left over from Christmas? Bring them along to the dance to share.

Friday 9th January 2026 7pm-9.30pm

Totton & Eling Community Centre,
Library Road, Totton, SO40 3RL

Celebrate the great Robbie Burns, we can't guarantee a haggis, unless of course Kay and Maggie have blow-up Haggis monsters somewhere in their kit cupboard! Maybe Paul will give us a rendition of a few Burns poems.

Wear your tartan - a skirt, trews, a tie, a scarf, whatever you have to hand.

Friday 23rd January 2026 7pm-9.30pm

Three Score Club, Library Road, Totton, SO40 3RS

Whose birthday? Is it the Club, is it Carol? It's Carol's of course, we had the Club birthday in November. Let's hope there's cake!

Saturday 7th March 2026 2pm-5pm

Three Score Club, Library Road, Totton, SO40 3RS

Turn up in your cowboy hat and boots. We think Carol is rather partial to a man in a cowboy hat so watch out!

Saturday 9th May 2026 2pm-5pm

Three Score Club, Library Road, Totton, SO40 3RS

Looking forward to Autumn and celebrating all the delicious fruit and veg we've been growing over the summer months.

Frequently
Asked Questions

Not at all, at regular Club nights on a Friday just wear comfortable shoes and whatever you feel happy dancing in. However, on the first Friday of every month you can wear dance clothes if you wish but it's not obligatory. We also wear dance clothes to special events dances at other Clubs.

We take dancers from 11 upwards, although 11-16 year olds must be accompanied by an adult. There is no upper age limit, just the ability to get up and have a go!

Currently £3 per session on a Friday evening from 7pm-9.30pm, including tea/coffee and biscuit.

You might think it’s Country or Barn Dancing but Square Dancing has its own set of moves, with 4 couples (left and right dancers) forming a square and dancing to instructions from the Caller. In a typical dance the right hand dancer (normally the lady) will move around the square going to each left hand dancer in turn until they get back to their original partner. We use a variety of music, anything that gives the correct tempo, so you might be dancing to a Jazz staple one minute, Country and Western the next, contemporary pop after that. Dancing keeps your mind and body active, is great for socialising with other dancers and forming long-term friendships.

Square Dancing is broken down into different stages. Basic to start with where you’ll start to learn the steps that will take you up to Mainstream level. Once proficient at Mainstream (68 moves) you might move up to Plus, and possibly beyond to A1, A2 and C. It’s your choice how far you go! It’s international and once you’ve gained your Mainstream Graduation certificate you can go to organised Dances across UK and the rest of the World, with Callers always announcing the moves in English.
